>(Fr) Art: The book reminisces everything about our youth as "Milbukians' ...Cheers!!!

Hello (Fr.) Art,
First of all, let me congratulate you for a job well done. You have done a masterful job of piecing together the history of what started as a handful of Milbukians finding each other in the Internet and leading to the developement of the now popular website the Milbuklegacy.com.  Like the pioneers of this website, we share that common yearning to again meet our high school classmates, teachers, personal friends and long lost relatives to at least say hello before we kick the proverbial bucket (so to speak).  The day I found out about the release of the completed book, I stayed up to 2:00AM excitedly parsing through the pages of the book "An Awakening".  I could have gone through the whole night reading it had Daisy not remind me of the time and about work the next day.  I know I will be going back again many more times in the following days to read the letters and passages more carefully.  I am happy to find the sections about the "sights and sounds of Milbuk", the questions and answers from the office of Weyerhauser company, the "Heroes section" and others.  I must admit, I have a few personal favorite sections in this book.  You know (Fr.) Art, after reading the pages of this book, a few questions came to me, like: What would it have been like if those trials and tribulations in Milbuk did not happen.  Will we still cherish the place like we do now or will it be taken for granted? If we were not driven away from Milbuk, will many of us who now lives elsewhere in the world, still find the courage to venture outside of our comfort zone?  There is one thing I know, my younger days living in Milbuk with my family was the best part of my life and still love the place for its beauty and simplicity.  God Bless the Milbukians.

Thanks Fidi.  I am now in the process of editing the Palms book and bringing the whole story up to date with contributions from the Milbukians.  I have done most of the work already but need to organize it in a an interesting format that will be easy to read.  I have also been thinking of converting the Milbuk story into a screen play for a movie.  Am I too ambitious?  Looking at all the movies that are in the theatres today, I am sure that I can create one that is interesting for most people.  I need to keep my mind and body active as I get older and hopefully wiser.  Thanks again for all your wonderful help.  I can only guess just how busy you are.  Talk with you later.  Peace.

Hi (Fr) Art

Reading the storybook was nostalgic...It was like traveling back to Milbuk in the 60's up to mid 70's.Congratulations and thank you for your initiative in preserving the legacy that is Milbuk..At the Milbuklegacy site, this is what I posted...

If history is all that happened..then you or we made history..the history of Milbuk or the the first recorded history of Milbuk. We really began  with oral history..ie when Milbukians meet we relate to one another our experiences in Milbuk. But now we have something that is recorded..something we can share with other Milbukians....the future generation of Milbukians..I recall our lessons in history classes in school; how ancient civilization did recorded historyfrom the cuneiform clay tablets...and now to the revolution of the digital age..

We all know this is far from perfect. We might have missed some events and personalities..but as a whole...the process was fluid..the events and experiences shared by Milbukians were real and inextricably intertwined.. There was coherence. I hope others will continue to blog and share their own experiences and be part of this "living through and making history"

ENHORABUENA..

Thank you, Bet, for the nice compliments.  All I did was to record what all of you have created through your relationships, compassion, interest and love.   The second part of the Milbuk Awakening will be the section entitled: In Their Own Words.  These stories are the contributions that certain Milbukians have been sending me during the past three years.  The memories are so interesting.  There is still time for members of the Milbuk community to send me their remembrances and recollections to be included in this second part.  Don't worry about the English.  Stories in Cebuano and Tagalog are accepted.  Thanks again.

Fide,

Nice Job!  Thank you for placing the document on the blog site.  I was surprised that 24 people have already downloaded the file.  I will complete the second part in a month or so.  Please don't forget our Canadian/American Reunion in Chicago on the weekend of September 9-11.  It would not be complete without you.  How nice it would be if you, your sister, Boni and Joey could all come together.  Bring the whole family.

Dear (Fr.) Art, I've read the first part of the STORY BOOK of Milbuklegacy.com. It's so amazing how every event could lead to another surprising development like a chain. What's so beautiful is that it seems there is One invisible hand guiding the whole common effort, each one contributing his/her share in the creation of a web of communication for Milbukians spread all over the globe. Praise God, and thanks to all those who put in their best effort to make the Milbuklegacy website a dream come true. I'm sure we can still do something more for the place and people left in Milbuk and the emerging global Milbukian community.

Welcome back everyone! I hope that you are all enjoying the Summer. For us in the colder climates, this season is very pleasant. For you in the Tropics, bordering the equator, it may not be very pleasant. I hear that the Philippines has really heated up as a result of global warming.
I have finished the first part of the new section on the history of Milbuklegacy.com. Anyone who would like a copy of the 34 page addition can send me their e-mail and I will send you a copy, either as a Word document or a PDF file. The second part, "The Children of Milbuk Speak", will be completed by the end of the Summer. I then plan to make a complete re-editing of the book, "On the Palms of My Hands" and publish the new edition with the title of "Milbuk Awakening".
I am still accepting contributions from all Milbukians, telling me about their experiences while living and studying in Milbuk. What would really round out and perfect the story of Milbuk are the stories of those who still live in Milbuk and the surrounding barangays of the Township. I will need help to contact those people in Milbuk. Any volunteers??? Maybe there are some Milbukians in Gen San who travel there on occasion. They could really help by bringing the questionnaire that I wrote as a guide to their story. What is not in the questionnaire is the most important element of all...what has happened in Milbuk after 1976 and how is Milbuk today? We want to document the history of Milbuk.
You can all contact me personally by my e-mail: aamaral11@comcast.net. I will always reply promptly. The questionnaire can still be obtained on the section of the website Projects: Fr. Art's Blog.
Thank you to all who have been so generous in contributing to this project. And thanks to all who have returned to blog on this site. Don't give up Merly...we are still interested in resurrecting this site.

We've heard the sad news of the passing of Estela Carzada, the sister of Oscar Carzada.  Let us as a community offer our prayers for the repose of her soul and ask the Lord to strengthen in faith the family of Estela in this moment of sorrow.
During this Easter Season, we continue to hear the promised Good News of Jesus, Who said, "I am the Resurrection and the Life".  These words are re-echoed and repeated many times and in various ways in the Gospel read at Mass.  Read for your consolation the comforting words of Jesus as recorded in John 14:1-12.

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

To: All Milbukians throughout the world.
CONGRATULATIONS!  Today is the 3rd anniversary of the creation of the milbuklegacy.com website.  During the past three years I have  greatly enjoyed reading about you and your families and experiencing the joys of your reunions in words and in photos.  Even the news of the passing away of many of the pioneers, family members, students and friends have given us all the opportunity to remember them in a special way and to pray for the repose of their souls. These are the people who contributed so much to our lives and the  stories that we told of them are precious memories to be treasured.
Milbuklegacy.com has brought us Milbukians together like no other social network, including Facebook.  Three years ago, (April 28, 2008) I e-mailed Fide to express my thanks for bringing into existence milbuklegacy.com.  This is what I said at the time:

Dear Fidelis:  I hope you received my E-mail telling you how surprised and pleased I was at the “milbuklegacy.com” website.  I want to thank you for the dedication.  I just want to say that the website is not about me, nor about the book I wrote. Milbuklegacy.com is all about you, the Milbukians.  All that I wrote was for one purpose, namely, to tell the world about the injustices done to the people of Milbuk and to the surrounding barrios.  I was seeking to find an answer for myself. What I learned is compassion and forgiveness.  Who was to blame?  I don't really know.  It's not that important anymore.  What is important is what you all are doing in communicating with one another and renewing your old friendships.  God had a plan in dispersing us throughout the world.  Jesus wanted us to continue His work and spread His love to others.  Now it is all coming back to us...as we return to the beginning.   What can we do for those who are left in Milbuk?  How can we leave our mark of compassion for them?   God bless all the Milbukians.              -Art Amaral-

The History of the "Beginnings of the Milbuklegacy.com Website" will be published on line for all to read in the next several weeks.  I want to include here a section of that "History" in celebration of the 3rd Anniversary.

"We thank the founders and the creator of this glorious website for their foresight, ingenuity and persistence in establishing such an effective vehicle of communication and unity. And we acknowledge those first bloggers on the Wikimapia website. These are their names and the order in which they appear on the Milbuk/Wikimapia website:"

OUR TOWN
(Iris Dement)

And you know the sun's settin' fast
and just like they say nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye but hold on to your lover
'cause your heart's bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town
goodnight

Up the street beside that red neon light
that's where I met my baby on one hot summer night
He was the tender and I ordered a beer
It's been forty years and I'm still sitting here

But you know the sun's settin' fast
and just like they say nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye but hold on to your lover
'cause your heart's bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town
goodnight

It's here I had my baby's and I had my first kiss
I've walked down Main Street in the cold morning mist
Over there is where I bought my first car
it turned over once but then it never went far

And I can see the sun settin' fast
and just like they say nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye but hold on to your lover
'cause your heart's bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town
goodnight

I buried my Mama and I buried my Pa
They sleep up the street beside that pretty brick wall
I bring them flowers about every day
but I just gotta cry when I think what they'd say

If they could see how the sun's settin' fast
and just like they say nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye but hold on to your lover
'cause your heart's bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town
goodnight

Now I sit on the porch and watch the lightning-bugs fly
but I can't see too good, I got tears in my eyes
I'm leaving tomorrow but I don't wanna go
I love you my town, you'll always live in my soul

But I can see the sun's settin' fast
and just like they say nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on I gotta kiss you goodbye but I'll hold to my lover
'cause my heart's 'bout to die
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on my town, on my town
Goodnight, goodnight

" MEMORIES OF MILBUK SOUNDS GOOD TO ME."

Author:(Fr.) Art Amaral
Date:Feb 28, 2011 06:42 AM

Hello Billy!  Thanks for the message.  Yes, God willing, Mary and I plan to attend the Reunion in the Philippines, whenever and wherever it may be.  We are looking forward to seeing you and Expo in Chicago or wherever the group decides to meet.  All the family is well.  Patrick, our youngest just graduated from Monclair State University this past December and is presently searching for a job in the line of his profession.  All the Cebuanos are well and we meet regularly every month and even weekly.  I am still working on the revision of the book and plan to republish it under another title.  These are some of the titles that I am considering:  MILBUK  -  BACK TO MILBUK  -  THE THREE JOURNEYS  -  RETURN TO PARADISE LOST  -  MEMORIES OF MILBUK

I want to open up a contest for the best name for this book.  Please send your suggestions to me on this blog site.   The core of the book will be a presentation of what life was like in Milbuk and the events leading up to and including the massacres, and the mass exodus of the people from the town.  The new addition to the book will be about the events leading up to the creation of the milbuklegacy website and the subsequent series of reunions that resulted.  Projections for the future of Milbuk will also be included.   Much of what many of you have sent me concerning your experience in Milbuk and the successes you have made of your life since the terrible events of 1974 will make up the latter third of the book.  Again, I thank you for your help and patience.

We are only six or seven weeks away from celebrating the third anniversary of the Milbuklegacy website.  Reflections on what the website has meant to you will be deeply appreciated here on this blog site.  We take this opportunity to again offer our heartfelt thanks to the pioneers of this website, those dedicated men and women of Milbuk, who have made so many sacrifices, so that we may be in contact with one another.  Only the Lord Jesus can adequately reward you for all that you have done to bring happiness into our lives and the opportunity to renew friendships.

Dear Marivic,
Thank you for contacting me.  You may have to refresh my memory concerning your parents.  Tell me something about them when they lived in Milbuk.  Did your father work for Weyerhaeuser?  The name is familar but my memory is weak...that's what happens to old people sometimes.  Where are you living on this earth?  Are you married...children? You can contact me by E-mail if you plan to relate personal information. (aamaral11@comcast.net)  Waiting to hear from you.

Dear (Sir/Fr.)

I am Marivic Ramos, I was still so young when I left Milbuk, you may not know me but I'm pretty sure that you know my parents Ramon and Amie Ramos, I'm so happy to learn about this website because I still have some clear memories of the people and places in Milbuk.
I hope to be able to get to know more Milbukians.  God bless and regards!

Hi and Merry Christmas to all. I think I am quite sooo late to post this thought but I really agree with you on the thought of organization formation. May God bless us all. As always I thank God for your enormous support to all of us. Happy and a prosperous new year.

Here in the United States we celebrate a Day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of the month of November.  This year, Thanksgiving Day falls on November 25, 2010.  And so I wish all those who reside in the U.S. of A. a very happy, safe and joyous Thanksgiving.  Personally, I thank God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the friendship of all of you who call yourself Milbukians.  I continue to marvel at all that has happened over the past three and half years during which we have discovered each other and renewed our relationships.  For this I am truly grateful.  Let us all thank the Good Lord for all that we have recieved.

Milbukians:

It appears that we have been having some difficulty in setting up an organization from among the membership for the purpose of facilitating projects and fund raising for our community in the Philippines, in particular Milbuk itself.  The word "Foundation" is such a technical and difficult word for us to use without involving the government or some other external governing body. According to Fide, “The initial plan to legalize the organization did not push through because, upon inquiring with the SEC to register a Foundation, it required an initial funding of One Million Pesos.  My suggestion would be to simply use the word, ASSOCIATION.  Its meaning in the dictionary denotes a group of people who unite together for a common cause...whatever that might be.  The LOGO we have is such a beautiful depiction of us Milbukians; except for the word...Foundation...it's too legal and restrictive as our experience shows.  My suggestion would be to change the Logo in only one respect, namely, to remove the word Foundation and replace it with Association.  They both have the same number of letters.

Also, we should attempt again to formally organize the "Association" to better accomplish the goals of the membership. I know that we can be much more effective in delivering services to our community and completing our projects if we have an organization...combining the best of our people from the Philippines and from the "diaspora"...those living outside the blessed country.  Much work has already gone into this project.  I am suggesting that we complete it.  Such a completion would certainly make what Oscar Carzada is doing in Milbuk far easier.

          Any comments?

Hi Fr. Rey,

Thanks for the prayers and the remembrance of my sister.   My sister, Mary, died last Friday, Oct. 15th.  Today her life is being celebrated with a Holy Mass at St. Jospeph's Church in Wakefield, Mass. I am confident in the Lord's promise of eternal life for those who believe in Him.  My sister was a good woman, a woman of faith, a woman of service to others, sacrificing her own comfort and pleasure so that her family would be well cared for.  I miss her.
And thank you for the compliment.  Anything that I can do for the Milbukian community around the world is no sacrifice to me but a privilege and an honor.
It was exciting for all of us to journey back to a Milbuk of 40 years ago.  We have bathed in the light and joy of being reuinted once again.  We have celebrated our connectedness on many occasions when we have gathered together in many countries around the world in groups of five and six to gatherings of hundreds.  Now is the time to commit ourselves, if we dare, to establshing opportunities for the young Milbukians.  We must consider what "legacy" we want to pass on to the young.  Oscar Carzada has begun a project for you to adopt and join, again, if you dare.  More about this project and companion projects will be further explained in the months ahead on this website.  Let us all support one another in what ever way we can.

Dear Art,

Greetings...

I recieved the email of Fide about your sister and rest assured of my prayers for her recovery.

I am now in Rome for the commencement of the new Academic year. I arrived October 11, 2010. We did have great fun in our unwinding and trip to Niagara Falls with the Villegas. It was really wonderful to be able to go down memory lane.

I would also liked to thank you for the inspiration and encouragement you give to Millbuk legacy and the milbukians.

Extend my regards to Mary and every one in the family.

Last Sept 26- Oct 6, 2010, I  also had the chance to go on a religious pilgrimage to Jerusalem and I stayed at the Passionist house there. Fr Apolinario Plaza, CP formerly working in General Santos City is now the religious superior in Jerusalem and he mentioned that he met you in one occassion in the US. He is extending his regards to you also.

I am looking forward to seeing you hopefully for another gathering next summer in the US.

Lastly, rest assured of my prayers.

Sincerely,

Fr Rey Mission

Milbukians:

It won't be long now.  I have been greatly inspired by Fidi and the Villegas clan who visited me last Saturday in Trenton, N.J.  I have close to 50 pages written already.  When I finish the first draft and edit out all the misspellings etc. I will send the manuscript to Fidi, who will figure out a way to enable you to read the Story of Milbuk in your own words.
God bless you all.

Hi All,

Mary and I just returned from vacation at Atlantic City, N.J.  We spent a week at a "time-share" that we bought over 12 years ago so that all our family could enjoy the surf and beaches of the Jersey Shore.
The highlight of the trip was a fishing expedition out on Barnegat Bay, a large body of water that borders Atlantic City to the North and West.  We went fishing for a much valued fish called "the Fluke" because of its strange shaped eyes that lie together on one side of its head.  The meat of the Fluke is mild and delicious much like the taste of the Talakiituk  (the spelling might be wrong).  The fish is plentiful but over the years it was over-fished which led to a marked decrease in number.  Therefore, the State law made a ruling that said:  No Fluke under 18 inches long could be kept by any fisherman.  If you happened to hook a Fluke under 18 inches, then you had to release the fish back into the water.  Our boat of 30 fishermen caught over 100 Fluke, but only two were able to be kept by the lucky fisherman.  I caught 5 Fluke but all of them were under 18 inches long.  Therefore, I had to release them back into the water for another time.
Mary, on the other hand, caught 10 Fluke and was able to keep one that measured 23 inches and weighed 4.25 lbs.  When we boarded the fishing boat each fisherman donated $3.00 to a "pool".  The person who caught the largest fish would get the money as a prize.  Well, wouldn't you know...Mary caught the largest fish and won $68.00.  All the men were quite surprised that this middle-aged Filipina had bested them with her big catch.  The captain of the boat was overjoyed and wanted Mary to have her picture taken with her big Fluke.  He said that he would publish her picture and story in the local paper.  Let me try to place a copy of the photo on this blog.
I am having difficllty in pasting the photo.  I will send the photo to Fide and have her paste it into the blog.
The Book Project will be presented on the first week of August.  See you soon.

Dear Milbukians,

Each day I scan this website and Facebook to look again with envy at the wonderful happy pictures of the Reunionistas.  I regret again and again that I was not able to attend.  Needless to say, God has truly blessed you all with this happy reunion.   Let us continue to be mindfull of one another and extend our helping hands whenever we are called upon to assist.  We still have several projects to consider.  Maybe now is the time to revisit them and update our progress.  As for me...I am still in the process of completing the Story Book.  Lately, I have been distracted by other duties that must be completed first.  I will be away on vacation for about a week and will be posting the first of many chapters upon my return (July 10-17).   I am sure that many of you experienced a jolt to your memories as you assembled together at Water Gran and spoke about the days of old in Milbuk.  Anything interesting that you would like to share???  If so, write them on this blog and share them with us all.
Again, I want to offer my deepest thanks and congratulations to all those who made the GGR 2010 so successful.  I do not want to mention names, lest I leave out someone who contributed.   You know who you are and so do I.  And the Lord Jesus knows all things.  Concerning the offering of money and also whatever good you do for one another, Jesus said: "Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing".  In other words, believe that "whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me...and your reward will be great in heaven."  Do not seek to be rewarded here in this life ... lest you lose the reward in the next.   "To you. O Lord, be all the honor and glory".  Let the peace of Christ reign in your hearts always.

                                                                                    Love and prayers to all,

                                                                                    (Fr.) Art

Hello Dolly,

Thanks for the blog. It brings back happy childhood memories with Philip Neibert..my buddy from elementary school( @2 years) on to High School at Notre Dame. I vividly recall the bungalow you mentioned..I would go to your house to buy (w special discount hehehe) "bagul","paya" or coconut shell  for charcoal.

I am pleased to have met Philip again and the family(Nyora Lina,Cherrry etc) in Zbga when the "grand old man" of the Neibert clan was finally laid to rest. Thanks again Dolly.

I am happy to see my long lost cousin Henry 3rd who lived in Milbuk, through this Websites, some of this Milbukians never dream of seeing through the eyes of the pioneers memories that there is a such place, created by Weyerhaeuser a little City (the Campo) with every thing on it. For those who remember we even have movies brought in from the States, we are looking forward in watching it every weekend, unless there was Typhoon coming otherwise the show must go on. Our Theater is on the front of the Grocery building by the sand. We bring our blanket and snack, drinks they are not provided by Basilan Lumber Company. Hey!! anyone remembers this while you live in Milbuk between 1956 to the 1965...Is that long time ago, way way back time. then every one from barrios came so they movies, so BLC moved to a Park , I remember it because it was  close vicinity to the house of my Classmate one of the Laraya's. That was really long time ago. Anyone from my class of'65 remember that episode of the life in Milbuk, during our journey in life...I love to hear it from you so, this young ones can relate to us oldie's...I love Milbuk, I grew up in Milbuk, I run around with my Grand Dad Henry Edward Neibert the pioneer. My life with my Grand Dad. He taught me a lot about money and clothing. I ask him one time in His shop on front of the Bungalow Grand Dad why are you always wearing that overall jeans? Then he would lovingly answer me, it's not what you wear tells about you, but how deep is your pockets. I have never forgotten that.  I once ask him? Why you never return back home to America? His answer was, I don't have relatives I can relate too, my Milbuk is my life and my relatives... So many of this I remember as a child growing up with the only one, and only one "The Owner and Pioneer Of Milbuk"  Henry Edward Neibert that I love. more of this is on my book coming soon...

Thank you for this new blogging site.  Don't forget to call.

Milbukians:
I am bringing together, in a unique way, the sayings and musings of the Milbukians.  Please, everyone, use this site to voice your opinions and contribute stories that you just remembered.
I really missed you all at the GGR 2010, and I am so sorry that I was not able to attend.   Congratulations to all those who spent countless hours organizing this event.  I am anxiously awaiting more pictures and comments about what happened.  Is there a list of all those who attended?   Now is the time to expand the "Faces" section of this website.

Hi Henry,

It is the kind of write-up that you just posted that will generate more support from other Milbukians to give back to Milbuk "the laurels they have merited". This offer of a scholaqrship is intended to match or augment what the government is giving to students of private schools in the Philippines under the GASTPE program. During the last GGR in Gen San, one my batchmates donated an amount for this scholarship. Also, another amount(in the form of a check) was turned over for an additional classroom. The Gonzales family thru Bong turned over a computer thru your principal Mr. Calixton. This was just the initial grant..I am sure we can generate more for NotreDame. I look forward to meeting you in your school including your School Director. principal and faculty. Thanks again Henry..."persevere for sacrifice begets happiness...

Dear Milbukians,

I was really suprised and impressed at the same time when I stumbled upon this
amazing website. Can you believe it, a website about a place that I thought wasn't known
by the world. Like everybody who made this web, I'm a milbukian, and a vaery proud one
I must say. I'm a graduating student at Notre Dame of Milbuk, S.Y. '10-'11. A son of the late
H.E. Neibert Jr. It was really nice knowing that the place I lived in wasn't unknown and there are some people out there who knows how to tumingin sa pinanggalingan and I'm really thankful for that.
Now I'm really proud to be a milbukian(though I always was). Thanks for everybody who have helped make this web especially the Memorial because I always have a chence to see dad again whenever I wish. I would also like to thank Mr. Oscar from Zamboanga for the scholarship he has offered at Notre Dame because he will be fulfilling a student's dreams.
            More power and God Bless!!!!
